Allan Lockheed (1889-1969) launched the original Lockheed Aircraft Company in 1926, which became the 26th largest industrial corporation in the United States.

Allan Lockheed made history in 1910 when he and George Gates made the first dual-pilot controlled flight. Lockheed also designed the first successful twin-engine, 10-passenger seaplane in 1916 and set a non-stop flying record of five hours from San Francisco to San Diego in this first hydroplane. He built the first Lockheed Vega in 1927, an airplane used by many famous Golden Age pilots who broke speed and endurance records, including Amelia Earhardt.
